Everyone knows all mugs are not the same, but in fact most don't know how widely different brands and models can vary in features and quality. The differences between plastic mugs and metal mugs is well-known, but less well-known are the differences that exist between different models of stainless steel mugs.
Now you may want to think about how much coffee you will be drinking between refills. Do you need a large 16oz mug, or will a 12oz travel mug suffice? One thing to consider is the larger the mug, the heavier it gets. Think heat! Do you like your coffee to remain smoking hot? If you are a slow coffee drinker you will definitely want a double insulated travel coffee mug. The more barrel shaped the mug the less surface area there is to insulate. So a short insulated travel mug is generally going to keep coffee hot longer than a tall slender mug. The problem with a squatty mug is the cup holder issue.
The lid of your mug is another important consideration. There are two main types of lids that are used, screw on and snap on. Overall, a screw on lid is best as it is less likely to accidentally pop off while you are driving. It also tends to make a better seal, so there is less chance of coffee leaking from between the mug and the lid.
